Sweet Freedom

I do many book reviews on books I either already own, have borrowed from friends, or checked out of the library. I always love trying new recipe books, but usually end up with older ones.

So it was a really refreshing change when I was asked to review a brand new eBook called Sweet Freedom: Desserts You’ll Love without Wheat, Eggs, Dairy or Refined Sugar by Ricki Heller.

Ricki sent me this book at a really coincidental time. I seem to be having some “issues” with gluten these days, and many of her recipes are either gluten free or have a “gluten free option”. She also offers recipes with sugar free options. So far, I was impressed.

I happily scrolled through the book and noticed the photos first (I’m a food porn girl at heart).  They looked marvelous. Definitely made me want to try a recipe or two.

Now, I should tell you that my husband begged and pleaded with me to make the Classic Peanut Butter Cookies. He even offered to make dinner if I’d only bake him the Peanut Butter Cookies.

But I wouldn’t give in. Nope! I stuck to my guns and went with the Maple Walnut Cookies instead. They aren’t gluten free, but they sure sounded good at the time.

At first, I thought it was a rather odd combination of ingredients. But I like the flavor of Maple and walnuts, so I gave it a try.

The description of these cookies lived up to it’s promises:

Chewy with a crisp exterior, these cookies showcase the classic combination of walnuts and maple“.

The flavor was good. I must say, it was just a bit different than I expected, but not in a bad way. These cookies grew on me really quickly. And as for that begging husband of mine…… I’ll believe he’ll make dinner when he actually puts the apron on!

I’ll definitely be making more of these recipes in the future.

Happy Baking!

Thanks so much for this review–I’m glad you ended up liking the cookies! If you’re looking for a more classic texture and taste, the Chocolate Mint Chocolate Chip cookies are easy and delicious. :)
